Das Projekt einer thematischen Kartenserie namens „Atlas Ost- und Südosteuropa“ (AOS) wurde im Jahr 1987 im Auftrag des österreichischen Bundesministeriums für Wissenschaft und Forschung eingeleitet, erschien im Jahr 1989 mit seinen ersten Lieferungen und wurde im Jahr 2014 mit der 30. Lieferung abgeschlossen.
Die einzelnen Ausgaben des Atlas können nach wie vor über den Verlag Schweizerbart Science Publishers bezogen werden.
